My Comeback Story: Mary Ann M.

On the go

My husband and I love to travel. Most of our trips consisted of lots of walking. My knee decided it was not up to the task anymore. I was determined to keep going. Walking from 3 to 5 miles a day was what I wanted to keep in my life. It was time to fix this. Before surgery I exercised my leg muscles around my knee, knowing that these muscles would be weak after surgery. Doing exercises made a big difference in my recovery. You have to make yourself do the therapy every day no matter how much it hurts, and it will hurt. I was told it would take up to six to a year to recover. It did not take me that long. With in the first two week, I was not using the walker, started using walking sticks. Went to therapy two times a week and did the therapy exercises at home everyday. The key is too keep moving. Within one and a months I was walking on my own,(carefully). By the third month I was released from therapy. Dr Hancock team released me and I now will see them in a year. You need support from your family and from the medical team to reach your goals. This I have received and continue to receive. It has been four months now. I walk three miles a day, ride my bike and when I go to church I can kneel, (which was my main goal). The main thing is too set a goal and stick to it no matter what, pain always goes away and time will fly by. I am glad I did the surgery, now I look forward to travel with my husband,(52 years together). Great team. Thank You.
