Understanding Arthritis: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Options

What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a broad term used to describe a disease of cartilage on the ends of your bones and is one of the most common causes of joint pain and stiffness. The condition refers to the breakdown of cartilage, most commonly around your joints, but this can affect main sections of the body, including the knees, hips, shoulders, hands, spine, and ankles.

At Desert Orthopaedic Center, each of our orthopedic specialists work closely with patients to diagnose arthritis and develop customized treatment plans designed to reduce pain, restore mobility, and improve overall quality of life.

Common Symptoms of Arthritis

Arthritis symptoms can develop gradually or appear suddenly depending on the type of arthritis and the affected joint. Common signs may include:

  • Joint pain or tenderness
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling around the joint
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Clicking or grinding sensations
  • Weakness or instability
  • Pain that worsens with activity

If left untreated, arthritis symptoms can continue to progress and interfere with work, exercise, sleep, and daily activities.

What Causes Arthritis?

Typically, Arthritis is generally caused by wear and tear over time on your body due to impact being placed on the body and genetics but there are other factors that can also lead to being categorized under more specific forms of arthritis.

Risk Factors

The main risk factors for arthritis may include:

  • Family history or Genetics
  • Time
  • Repetitive physical activity
  • Previous injuries
  • Being too sedentary
  • Certain autoimmune disorders
  • Occupational strain

Different types of Arthritis

There are several different types of arthritis, each with its own underlying causes. Some of the most common include:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and occurs when the protective cartilage within a joint gradually wears down over time. This leads to bone-on-bone connection which can cause inflammation and can be painful due to high nerve endings in this part of the bone.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy joint tissue in the lining of the joint, leading to inflammation and joint damage. It most commonly affects the joints in your fingers, hands, wrists, knees, ankles, feet and toes but it can affect other parts of the body as well.

Post-Traumatic Arthritis

This type of arthritis develops after a traumatic injury such as a fracture, ligament tear, or dislocation. Athletes and physically demanding workers may be at higher risk.

How Arthritis Is Diagnosed

Proper diagnosis is the first step toward effective treatment. At Desert Orthopaedic Center, orthopedic specialists begin with a comprehensive evaluation that may include:

  • A physical examination
  • Discussion of symptoms and medical history
  • X-rays or advanced imaging
  • Range of motion testing

Identifying the specific type and severity of arthritis helps physicians create a personalized treatment plan tailored to each patient’s needs and lifestyle.

Arthritis Treatment Options

Treatment for arthritis depends on the affected joint, severity of symptoms, activity level, and overall health goals. Our orthopedic specialists often begin with non-surgical treatment options before considering surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.

Non-Surgical Arthritis Treatments

Many patients experience significant relief through non-operative care, including:

  • Physical therapy
  • Anti-inflammatory medications (ex. Ibuprofen or Tylenol)
  • Activity modification
  • Bracing or supportive devices
  • Biologic injections such as PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) or BMAC (Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate)

When Is Surgery Recommended?

If arthritis pain becomes severe and conservative treatments no longer provide relief, surgery may be recommended.

Depending on the affected joint and condition, surgical options may include:

  • Arthroscopic procedures (ex. Knee Arthroscopy)
  • Partial joint replacement
  • Total joint replacement (Patients tend to do this once they have exhausted all the non-surgical options and the pain is impacting their function and overall quality of life)

At Desert Orthopaedic Center, our orthopedic surgeons use advanced techniques and individualized care plans to help patients recover safely and return to daily activities with improved function and comfort.
